How did that happen?
One of the legends surrounding the festival is about an advisor to the Emperor. He was banished and took his life by leaping into the river. Because the common people loved him, the fishermen used their oars to hit the water to stop man-eating fish from eating it. Other villagers threw boiled rice wrapped in leaves into the water to lure the fish away from him.
The result is today’s traditional festival of dragon boat races and dumplings. Meanwhile, dragon boat driving has developed into a real camaraderie sport. The drum music sets the pace, flags are waved and spectators fire their favorite teams.
