History in Manila – Fort Santiago (Fuerza de Santiago)
The impressive Fort Santiago is one of the most important historic buildings in the region. Its uses included a jail and execution site during Spanish colonial times and World War II. The fort is home to a fascinating museum recounting the history of the complex over three centuries. For instance, it was once used as the main trans-shipment site for the spice trade between Europe and America. It witnessed battles with British conquerors and tells of the Americans’ influence after the Spanish-American War. It also bore witness to the Japanese siege during World War II.
Walled city and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site of San Augustin Church
The oldest part and historic centre of Manila is the “Walled City” known as Intramuros, which is home to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site of San Augustin Church. The 16th-century Catholic church is considered a national treasure in the Philippines, fusing Chinese and Spanish design. Buried inside are famous figures from Philippine history and culture.
The fascinating underwater world at Manila Ocean Park
The Manila Ocean Park aquatic complex was opened in 2008 as place for everything when it comes to animals and water. There are interactive zones and – its main attraction – the Oceanarium, with 14,000 marine animals. Be sure not to miss the Trails to Antarctica. With its penguins, it is one of the park’s most popular attractions.
Shopping at the Mall of Asia (MOA)
No trip to Asia is complete without “shopping until you drop”. The Mall of Asia is one of the largest shopping Meccas, not only in the Philippines, but across Asia and the world. Over five levels, it boasts shops offering a vast selection of fashion, technology, furniture, accessories and much more. In addition to the shopping experience, it also regularly hosts concerts and fireworks, not to mention its state-of-the-art IMAX cinema and the Philippines’ first Olympic-size ice-skating rink. A ride in one of the specially air-conditioned gondolas on the 55-m-high “Mall of Asia Eye” is an absolute must.
