The JUNGFRAUJOCH
One million people a year make the once-in-a-lifetime trip to Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest train station at 3454m. The train that chugs up from Kleine Scheidegg ramps up the drama as it delves into Eiger’s icy heart to emerge at the Sphinx meteorological station. At the summit, sensational views of the Aletsch Glacier and a never-ending ripple of Alpine peaks unfold. Besides the staggering panorama, there’s an Ice Palace and Snow Fun Park to explore. Warm clothing and sturdy shoes essential.
The CASTELGRANDE
Rising dramatically above the Old Town, this medieval stronghold is Bellinzona’s most visible icon. Head up Salita San Michele from Piazza Collegiata, or take the lift, buried deep in the rocky hill in an extraordinary concrete bunker-style construction, from Piazza del Sole. After wandering the grounds and the museum, stroll west along the Murata, the castle’s snaking ramparts, with photogenic views of vine-streaked mountains and castle-studded hills.
The RHEINFALL
Ensnared in wispy spray, the thunderous Rheinfall might not give Niagara much competition in height (23m), width (150m) or even flow of water (700 cu metres per second in summer), but Europe’s largest plain waterfall is stunning nonetheless. Trails thread up and along its shore, with viewpoints providing abundant photo ops.
The CHÂTEAU DE CHILLON
From the Montreux waterfront, fairy-tale Chemin Fleuri (Floral Path) – a silky smooth promenade framed by flowerbeds positively tropical in colour and vivacity – snakes dreamily along the lake for 4km to the magnificent stone hulk of lakeside Château de Chillon. Occupying a stunning position on Lake Geneva, this oval-shaped 13th-century fortress is a maze of courtyards, towers and halls filled with arms, period furniture and artwork. The landward side is heavily fortified, but lakeside it presents a gentler face.
