The festival is based on the old Julian calendar. With the Russian Christmas the lent ends, which started 40 days before. Previously, celebrations in Russia were concluded with a feast, Sochivo (also called Kutja). The food cooked with almonds, poppy seed, honey and cereals symbolized peace and immortality. Today, the most important Russian Orthodox Christmas service is even televised. If you are in Moscow at the time of the Christmas Mass, then come in time to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
