Due to the hot and humid climate, much of daytime life takes place in air-conditioned shopping malls. They are not simply somewhere to congregate, but also places to people watch and be seen. Visit the cinema or meet up for coffee. Whether it’s the whirl of the street market in the Thamrin City Mall or the upmarket Plaza Indonesia, home to Gucci, Prada & other luxury brands – both sit side by side in Indonesia.

Catch a glimpse of this fascinating city from above. Indonesia’s national monument Monas (Monumen Nasional) is a 137-metre-high tower that you can’t just admire from the outside. Access to the observation deck, from where you can soak up stunning views of the entire metropolis of 30 million inhabitants, is via a museum housed in a hall below the monument.
